trend: abstract dots

I recently took a quiz to see if I am left brained or right brained. I knew the answer already but I thought it would be fun to see how I tested. Just as I suspected, I use each side of my brain equally. In fact, it’s almost scary to see how perfectly this plays out in my life. Take my clothes for instance. If you look in my closet, items are organized not only by color but also by style (tanks, short sleeve, long sleeve). Drawers are sorted in the same way with with boxes and dividers to keep them tidy. But there is always a heap of clothes on the chair at the end of my bed. As much as I need to have a system in place, I also need the option to break the system at will.

Which brings me to my new obsession: abstract dots. The left-brained me loves (to no end) black and white stripes. I use them in almost every room in my home (and sneak them into client’s homes too! See my portfolio)…drapes, tables, walls, pillows, rugs. They are simple and orderly and make me happy in a way that no other pattern does. Until now. Enter the right-brained me. I saw this photo in the March issue of Lonny magazine and I seriously went nuts over the space, specifically the dot painting.

master bedroom: part one

After two attempts (a big thank you to my photographer Kari for shooting the same space TWICE), I finally have a happy master bedroom. It’s so important for this space to be relaxing, beautiful and sexy all at once. As a parent, I find myself retreating to this room to get away from the chaos of the rest of the house. It’s the first and last thing I see when I get up so it has to invoke energy and peace at the same time — although most of my energy comes from four one cup of morning coffee.

The room is large so I wanted a darker color on the walls to cozy it up a bit. The navy blue [Valspar--Pitch Cobalt 5010-2] does just that, and the crisp white trim and bedding keep it from feeling dreary. I couldn’t resist the furry white pillows at Garden Ridge for $20 each (knock-off of these fabulous bad boys). They are super playful and fun, and this all-white bed needed something furry to liven it up a little! The patterned pillow was thrifted and the chevron dot pillow was on clearance at Target for a whopping $5. I know, big spender. I made the headboard myself. The materials cost less than $100 and it only took about two hours. I have now made two headboards and I’ve learned a lot about the process…the makings of a great DIY post (on what NOT to do).
